What is the best pot for a cactus? ›

Concrete planters are porous so water can evaporate quickly, making them the perfect pot material for cacti and succulents. It's important that they have drainage holes as well. Concrete planters are durable and great at insulating plants against sudden temperature fluctuations.

Simply mix 3 parts potting soil, 3 parts coarse sand, gravel, or horticultural grit (do not use sand or grit from your garden because it is not sterilized), and 2 parts perlite or pumice. Don't use a potting soil mix that contains fertilizers because the fertilizer can burn cacti roots and cause leggy growth.

It is important to repot in a new container that is only one size larger, rather than moving the cactus into a much larger container. Large containers retain more moisture than smaller pots, and cactus roots, which are tender and easily damaged, are susceptible to excessive moisture.

Place your cactus in the pot so that the stem or root ball is at the same depth as it was before transplanting. Wear gloves or use a thick layer of newspaper to protect your hands! 4. Fill in around the rootball, leaving about an inch between the top of the soil and the rim of the container.

Taking into account the width of the cactus (usually around 10-15cm), this means a pot which is about 30-40cm wide. For our large cuttings you may want to use a 50cm wide pot.

Cacti should be repotted when they outgrow their containers or become root bound. When plants become root bound, they fail to absorb nutrients and produce little growth. It is best to repot a cactus into a container only slightly larger than the container it has outgrown.

First, make sure to use the soak-and-dry method. This means giving your cactus good water until water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Allow the soil to completely dry before watering again. It's important to avoid overwatering, as cacti are adapted to dry conditions.

Right - the volume of the pot should be a little larger than the existing root ball. You want some space for new root growth, but not so much that it's going to stay wet for long. Some other cactus species have deep tap roots, though.
